it's almost time

It's the most exciting time of the year for sports fans.  And unless your diamond squad is making an October run your attention has turned to football as the countdown to kickoff for colleges and pro ticks away.  Oh hell, ESPN had high school games on today and I was watching.

The mundane nature of work fades throughout the week and last minute fantasy switches and trades are made.  But I am getting way ahead of myself.  Most fantasy owners should have either just had or are awaiting their draft, which I would argue is the most exciting part of fantasy football.  By the middle of next week we should have a good idea of who will make the 53-man rosters and who is injured going into the regular season (granted you will still draft the most ballin' players that are expected to miss a few early games).

Who likes drafting first?  There is huge potential to blow it with this pick and sweat while better picks drop off the board and the best 15-19 players are gone before you get to pick again.  Luckily, Buffalo Wild Wings has a solution for this problem.  Have your draft party at BWW and they will give you food or drink or something.  But in the 10 minutes or so between picks you can polish off at least 3 wings before retuning your attention to the 3rd-5th rounds of the draft where you can really create separation from the competition.

So do your homework.  Is your league set up for big points?  Is defense rewarded?  A catch league?  Don't just go by ESPN and Yahoo rankings, in this new media age many times the smaller "blog" sites have great insight.  And they even have first hand knowledge and insider information when it comes to injuries.  KFFL is one of my favorites.

So to close I want to address Hank Williams, Jr., Faith Hill and whoever is singing on Monday night this year.  I am ready for some football because baseball is just too depressing right now.
